Recycled cooking oil is dangerous for health

Consumption of recycled cooking oil can cause illnesses, such as inflammation of the liver, cancer and heart attack. There is a huge volume of imported dangerous recycled cooking oil in circulation now in Bangladesh.

Doctors Organisation (Perdim) central committee member Dr Zubaidi Ahmad said, the toxic content in recycled oil could cause blockage of the blood vessels, as well as increase blood pressure.

He said, although the waste oil had been recycled, including going through the process of bleaching and filtering, it was still unsafe for consumption.

Dr Zubaidi Ahmad said, it was difficult to differentiate between quality and recycled cooking oil as they looked the same as it would require laboratory test to determine their quality.

However, he said, consumers could do their own test to know if their cooking oil was recycled oil.

It can be done by placing the cooking oil in a refrigerator for about two hours, and if looks frothy after that, then it is recycled cooking oil, he added.

Dr Zubaidi advised the people to buy cooking oil produced by licensed companies and also certified by Sirim.

How to determine if cooking oil is recycled oil-

1. place your cooking oil in the fridge for about 2 hours, if there is whitish bubbles or foam, you know then it is made from recycled oil waste materials. We need to spread the news to our loved ones.

2. Put a clove of garlic when about to fry, if the garlic turns red, that means the toxic level of recycled Oil is very high. Garlic will remain white if the oil is of good quality.
